International abduction bill will help reunite parents with kids

Some Denver families have found out the hard way that child custody disputes are usually complex and rife with emotions. Most parents want to do what is best for their children, but sometimes they fail to consider the desires of their former partner. In order to skirt the system and prevent the other parent from spending time with their child, some individuals will leave the country and take their kid with them.

International abduction cases are all too common. In fact, in an effort to give better controls over how to handle them, congress has recently passed an act that will assist the government in bringing children home. According to reports, the Sean and David Goldman International Child Abduction Prevention and Return Act of 2013 is designed to give the president the authority to sanction countries that are unwilling to cooperate by returning children who have been taken.

While the bill, which was named after a man who fought for years to get his son returned from Brazil, was approved by Congress without opposition, it still has to pass through the Senate before it can become official. Supporters are eager to see the bill’s outcome given that, according to the State Department, there were approximately 7,000 children from the United States who were kidnapped during a four year period ending in 2012.

Those who are currently in the middle of a difficult child custody dispute should turn to a family law attorney for assistance. While not all disputes result in abduction, it is still important to ensure that you know your parental rights and protect them.
