Denver intersection cameras under scrutiny

Traffic red-light cameras have been in place across Colorado since 2005. Recently these cameras have been a source of conflict in the Colorado Legislature. A car accident can be a life-altering event and traumatic for all those involved.

A proposal banning traffic cameras has recently been introduced in the Colorado Senate. The proposal’s sponsors argue that these cameras do not decrease traffic accidents and are just a way for local government to make money. In 2013, Denver sent out over 35,000 red light camera tickets and almost 195,000 speeding tickets which brought in a combined revenue of $7.8 million. There are several critics of the bill including police departments and advocates for the disabled. The police contend that these cameras have led to a decrease in traffic accidents. The advocates for the disabled say the cameras are necessary to spot cars who pull out into an intersection forcing disabled people who are blind or in a wheelchair to go around them and placing them at risk of getting hit by other cars driving by.

Families who have had a loved one seriously injured or killed in a car accident know how hard it is to deal with such an unexpected tragic event. No one wants themselves or their loved one to be involved in these accidents so safety should always be a top priority. When a loved one is hurt in a car accident caused by a negligent driver it may be possible to compensation. Compensation is available for medical expenses, loss of wages, pain and suffering and other damages.

Denver families who have been affected by a negligent driver know how their lives can change in an instant. Careful, defensive driving is the best way to prevent accidents.
