What are the injuries a person could sustain in a car accident?

Chances are that you will be involved in a car accident during your driving lifetime. Car accidents can range from minor fender-benders to major multi-car pileups. Hopefully you will not suffer any injuries or they will be minor. But, what types of injuries can people suffer if they are in a car accident?

Whiplash is what many people think of when they think about car accident injuries. Whiplash occurs when there is sudden movement of the head and neck. For example this can happen in a rear-end collision. Neck pain, swelling and vocal cord damage can occur from whiplash.

Chest trauma can also occur. A car accident can cause broken ribs, collapsed lungs, internal bleeding and damage to internal organs. A person with a heart condition could also go into cardiac arrest following a car accident.

One of the most serious injuries a person can sustain in a car accident is a head or brain injury. Drivers and passengers can strike their head against the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield which can cause a traumatic brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries often include a lifetime of care because of frequent headaches, memory loss, vision problems and other conditions. Back injuries are also common because of the sudden stop and jarring of a car accident. Spinal cord damage could result in nerve damage and decreased sensation over body parts.

Other injuries can include lacerations, injuries to hands, feet, arms and broken bones. The emotional distress a person can suffer from after an accident is also quite serious. Often times a person needs treatment and counseling for the tremendous emotional and stressful event they just went through.
