Basic motorcycle safety

Many people in Colorado enjoy riding motorcycles. The state offers stunning territory where motorcycle riders can enjoy the scenery and beautiful weather. Although it is impossible to control negligent drivers who cause motorcycle accidents, there are things that motorcyclists can do to keep themselves safer on Colorado roads.

Motorcyclists have the right to drive on Colorado roads just as cars and trucks do. Motorcyclists, because of their exposure, should be aware that they are at a greater risk of serious injury and death if they are involved in an accident. There are risks that are involved in riding a motorcycle, but they can be diminished by following some safety protocol.

First, helmets should be worn by drivers and passengers. A helmet can reduce the risk of a brain injury or death. Eye protection is also important to guard against bugs, dirt and other debris that can hurt eyes. Protective clothing should be worn in case a rider is thrown from the bike. Riders may also want to consider wearing bright colors to help alert other drivers of their presence.

It is also important to buy the right motorcycle. Motorcycles come in all shapes and sizes, so making sure that a rider is able to handle the motorcycle is important. A motorcycle riding class is also important to ensure a motorcyclist has the skills to drive their motorcycle. Motorcycle drivers, like all drivers, should never drink and drive or do anything that compromises their full attention to the road. Also, defensive driving is very important when riding a motorcycle. Many accidents are caused by negligent drivers who don't see a motorcyclist or don't pay attention to their surroundings.

There are many safety issues to keep in mind while riding a motorcycle. All drivers on the road should be aware of motorcyclists and afford them the same courtesy as all other vehicles. Staying safe on the roads should be the number one priority for everyone in Colorado.
