One in six trucks are not safe on the highway

A person cannot drive in Colorado without encountering a semi-truck. These big rigs are necessary in order to transport food and goods across our country. But, according to a recent news report, many of these trucks are unsafe to drive and can cause truck accidents.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there were more than 300,000 semi-truck accidents between 2009 and 2013. More than 14,000 people have died because of accidents involving a semi-truck. Although there are federal trucking regulations in place to keep the trucking industry in check, it is up to the states to decide what to focus on during truck inspections. Every year each state must submit an enforcement plan to the FMCSA, and they receive federal money if their plan is good. Each state may have unique circumstances regarding trucks. Some states have more logging trucks so they are interested in ensuring secure loads. States like Colorado have hills, so brakes regulations are heavily enforced.

According to the FMCSA, one in six trucks that were pulled over for an inspection were deemed unsafe to drive because of how out-of-order they were. This is a scary figure for Colorado drivers. Defective auto parts in trucks can cause serious accidents. Bad brakes can be the difference between making it down a hill safely or careening out of control and into oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, Colorado ranks third in big rig accidents per vehicle mile traveled.

A person who has been injured in an accident with a big rig knows how these wrecks can happen in a split second. A legal professional skilled in personal injury can help the injured driver and their family determine what caused the accident. They can fight to try to hold the negligent party responsible for their actions, and recover compensation for the victim.
