When it comes to a divorce, any splitting spouse wants the divorce to go as well as it possibly could for them. They will have this picture in their head of how they are going to get all of the assets that they want (and, in their mind, deserve) and that every issue will go exactly as they plan it.
In reality, though, this rarely happens. Divorces are unique and complicated, and the emotional thoughts that go into this "picture perfect" idea of divorce almost never come to a fruition. With that in mind, it is best for anyone getting a divorce to have a practical mindset going into it. Divorce mediation can be of tremendous help to people in this regard.
There are some other important lessons that people going through a divorce need to know. For example, you need to plan and be organized before the divorce really heats up. Know your financial picture. Understand all the issues that are in play, and how you factor into those issues.
Another example is to utilize your attorney whenever possible. If there is something you don't understand about your divorce, ask questions. The more you know, the better off you will be when it comes to your divorce.
Last but not least, your immediate future isn't the only thing that you should take into account during your divorce. Think about five or ten years down the line. The assets and provisions in your divorce need to be considered with a long-term picture in mind.
