Each year thousands of lives are lost to accidents caused by drunk drivers. Only a few weeks into 2016 and the Denver community mourns the loss of two talented musicians. The crash that led to the death of these two young men was believed to be caused by a man under the influence of alcohol.
According to witnesses, the vehicle driven by a 55-year-old Denver man was traveling north on the Colorado Boulevard going in estimated 70 to 80 miles an hour when it collided with vehicles stopped at an intersection. One of those vehicles was a small Pontiac vibe and was sitting at a red light when the alleged drunk driver smashed into it.
The vibe was carrying two Denver men, both of whom were well-known, local musicians. The men, a 43-year-old and 29-year-old, were killed instantly. Two other automobiles were also involved in the collision and carried a total of five people, all of whom suffered injuries.
According to authorities, the alleged drunk driver was found slumped down in his vehicle in a parking lot just minutes before the crash. It is believed that he then woke up and took off speeding down the road. When authorities arrived at the accident scene, the alleged drunk driver had also suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. He will remain in police custody for suspicion of driving under the influence until authorities rule out the possibility of a medical condition being the cause of the crash.
For the families of those injured or killed in this accident, it may be easier to deal with their loss if it is discovered the accident was caused by medical condition. However, if alcohol is discovered to be the true cause, they may wish to speak to an attorney about holding the drunk driver legally accountable for his negligent actions.
