Restraint is the best defense against an aggressive driver

Most of us simply want to conduct the business of our daily lives without conflict, and nothing can sour a day quite as badly as a negative encounter with another person. But while an angry exchange experienced face-to-face or over the phone can be unpleasant, a conflict that takes place while driving can be downright life-threatening.

Of course, while on the road, all motorists should do their level best to drive defensively and respect the rights of all other drivers. But unfortunately, far too many people will let their emotions get the better of them and drive in an aggressive, dangerous manner. Acts of aggressive driving, such as illegal passing, erratic lane changing and tailgating are said to be a factor in as many as 56 percent of fatal collisions.

One problem is that drivers sometimes respond to the acts of an aggressive driver by honking the horn, making an obscene gesture or yelling. Such actions may serve to escalate the situation to the point of road rage. Once things have gone that far, a raging driver may actually use his or her car as a weapon to ram the other vehicle or force it off the road.

So the smart move to make if you are ever in proximity to an aggressive driver is to avoid conflict at all costs. This means putting distance between yourself and the other vehicle. You don’t even want to engage in eye contact with the driver because he or she may take that as a challenge. And if the driver begins to follow you or makes any other threatening moves, you may want to contact 911 or get to a location where there are plenty of witnesses.

Acts of aggression or road rage can cause serious or even fatal accidents. If you or a member of your family was catastrophically injured due to the reckless actions of an aggressive driver, a Colorado personal injury attorney may be able to help you hold the responsible party accountable and get you appropriate compensation to cover your medical and other expenses.
