How to manage work during a stressful divorce

Divorce is not something that just happens in a courtroom. It effects every aspect of your daily life and can negatively impact your career.

In fact, work was probably a focal point of your marriage in many ways. You may have worked overtime to afford a family vacation or little extras at home. You most certainly shared your work-related successes and stresses with your estranged spouse. The last thing you need while going through divorce is to become bitter, angry or set your career back.

That’s why it’s important to consider ways to manage work in a positive fashion while going through divorce. Hopefully, these tips will make a difference during this difficult period.

  • Talk To The Boss: Let your supervisor know that you are in the midst of a divorce and will try to limit any missed work hours. Experienced supervisors are likely to have had staff members go through divorce before and understand the process.
  • Peer Workers: If you are the member of a team or have a work partner who relies on you, let them know about your situation. Also, make it clear that you will do your best to pull your weight and thank those who help fill the void when you are absent.
  • Limit Divorce Talk: It’s common for divorcing people to get consumed by legal and personal issues. Co-workers in professional environments are not the best sounding boards. Keep divorce talk to a minimum and consider working with a therapist to express your emotions.
  • Professional Conduct: Although your emotions may be playing havoc internally, it’s important to maintain professional standards and behavior in the work place.
  • Take Responsibility: It is simply not realistic to perform at your best when you are struggling through divorce. Accept that your productivity may dip during this period. If a colleague or supervisor points out a decline or quality issue, do not get defensive. Explain that you are having difficulty at times and are giving your best effort and will continue to do so.
  • Love Yourself: Divorcing people sometimes allow personal care to slip during divorce. Things like hygiene, health, fitness, mental focus and even eating habits can decline. While transitioning to single life, it’s time to love yourself harder. Take care of your mind, body and spirit. Maybe you take up a yoga class, join a gym, get on a weight-loss program, learn about mindfulness or just get a massage. Be kind to yourself.
