How often is alcohol involved in fatal pedestrian accidents?

A pedestrian accident may be the result of a driver surpassing the speed limit, or it could be caused by a pedestrian attempting to dart across the road at night in a dangerous location. Many pedestrian accidents are the result of alcohol consumption, whether a driver is under the influence or a pedestrian is walking around while intoxicated. Moreover, some drivers and pedestrians do not realize just how common this actually is and how many pedestrian lives are lost as the result of intoxication on the road. It is pivotal to be mindful of this issue whether you like to walk or drive.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reports that more than 2,000 pedestrian fatalities involved alcohol during 2010. In fact, nearly half (47.2 percent) of all pedestrian fatalities during this year involved the use of alcohol. The BTS also points out that while some fatal pedestrian accidents were caused by drivers who were under the influence of alcohol, many were caused by pedestrian intoxication. Furthermore, pedestrians have more vulnerability as opposed to those riding in a vehicle.

Sadly, many pedestrian lives have been lost as a result of drunk driving and walking around while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is pivotal for both pedestrians as well as drivers to be mindful of the risks associated with being on the road while intoxicated and avoid any other behaviors that could lead to a fatal crash. Furthermore, the victims of these accidents should not hesitate to hold drunk drivers responsible for their actions.
