Being courteous when you are driving around motorcyclists

When you are in your car traveling in Colorado and a motorcyclist suddenly enters your field of vision, you may be caught off guard by his or her sudden appearance. Because motorcyclists are much smaller than an average vehicle and are more vulnerable than other motorists, it is critical that you drive extra cautiously around them. At Ciancio, Ciancio & Brown, we have been able to help many victims and their families with the consequences of tragic motorcycle accidents.

One of the most important precautions you should take is to make sure you allow the motorcyclist plenty of room when you are making maneuvers such as passing and changing lanes. Additionally, Esurance suggests that you increase your following distance and follow the 4-second rule. Essentially, this means you should take at least four more seconds to pass an object that the motorcyclist in front of you has already passed.

Another place where it would benefit you to use caution is when you are using your mirrors. Sometimes, motorcyclists can be obstructed from your view if they are riding alongside you in your blindspot. On top of utilizing your mirrors for visibility, take extra effort to verify that there is no one in your blind spot before you move your vehicle.

When you are aware of your surroundings and understanding of the fact that motorcyclists can be more difficult to see, you can be more confident in your ability to drive safely near one.
