Most Colorado drivers are well aware of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Regardless, some people still make poor choices before operating a motor vehicle, and unfortunately sometimes, such choices lead to a serious accident resulting in life-altering injuries or even fatalities. In a recent example, a driver suspected of DUI collided with several vehicles at an intersection, leaving at least three people seriously injured.
The crash happened on New Year's Eve at an intersection in Lakewood. According to West Metro Fire Rescue, a driver collided with several other vehicles and then crashed head-on with a truck. Reportedly, three people were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries they suffered in the collision. Apparently, the driver responsible attempted to flee the scene, but nearby citizens stopped him.
Lakewood police have said the driver has been arrested. They suspect both drugs and speed were factors. The 34-year-old man has been booked at the local jail and faces charges of vehicular assault DUI, driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident and no proof of insurance. Police are asking anyone with information about the driver's actions prior to the crash to contact their tip line or Crime Stoppers.
Although the extent of the injuries has not been reported, the victims may be enduring significant physical and emotional pain and may even face significant lifestyle changes moving forward. Often, a serious accident such as this one also creates a challenging financial situation for victims and their families as they encounter hospital bills at the same time as they must deal with missing income. In Colorado, many people in this position choose to pursue the matter through the civil justice system. An attorney experienced in personal injury law can be a valuable resource for such people.
