Man faces strict punishment for snubbing divorce-hearing orders

Divorce settlements often come down to the money. Especially in high-asset divorce cases, each party wants to get what they feel they deserve. Whether you live in Denver, or another city in the U.S., family law courts in these cases work to fairly divide the couple's assets and any property interests they have between them. When court orders are passed, it's expected that they be followed for the best interests of everyone involved.

An ongoing dispute highlights the consequences of disregarding the orders of the court. A former hand surgeon is facing a number of charges related to the contentious divorce between him and his estranged wife.

In addition to already being jailed for failing to appear at a mandatory court hearing, the man has also been charged with violating his child support agreement and for contempt of court. The contempt charge stems from him allegedly purchasing a Ferrari for more than $300,000 after being ordered to only spend what was necessary and normal for daily costs of living. In his defense, he argued that his wife drives a Lamborghini.

Although many divorce cases are simple and don't require lengthy court proceedings, there are some situations where it's necessary to bring in outside mediation in order to sort out all of the details. Without the involvement of court officials, the man in this case could have continued his outlandish spending and drained their funds before a settlement was reached. For high-profile couples or couples with extensive funds and holdings, it may be a wise decision to have an attorney assist in protecting interests and dividing assets.
