How many pedestrians die in accidents per year?

Pedestrian accidents are a major problem in Colorado and across the entire country. Whether someone is trying to cross the road while walking their dog or decides to get some exercise or walk to work, there are many benefits that come with walking and reasons why people decide to walk. Sadly, some of them are struck by a vehicle and their entire life changes in an instant. Sometimes, these accidents prove fatal and it is important to be aware of just how many lives are claimed each year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that 4,735 pedestrians lost their lives in accidents during 2013. Not only did these pedestrian accidents claim thousands of lives, but they left far more people injured over the course of the same year (66,000, according to estimates). Between 2004 and 2013, more than 4,000 pedestrians passed away in accidents each year, accounting for anywhere from 11 percent to 14 percent of all traffic fatalities each year. Clearly, pedestrian accidents are a major problem and the prevalence of these fatal accidents should not be overlooked by drivers or those who choose to walk.

Negligent drivers cause pedestrian accidents for different reasons, from intoxication to simple carelessness and disregard for signs. Even when a pedestrian survives after being hit by a vehicle, they may be injured, which can affect their ability to work, exercise, or participate in other important activities. When someone hits a pedestrian due to negligence, it is imperative for them to be held fully responsible for any hardships that the victim endures.
